STUDENTS walking the length of the country said they have been blown away by the kindness and generosity of people in Caithness.

Twenty-one-year-olds Tolga Necar and Ben Walshe, from Warwickshire, are raising money for Cancer Research UK by walking from Dunnet Head to Land’s End.

The acts of kindness by locals began when a stranger handed them a £20 donation at Thurso’s train station.

On Tuesday, a resident in Canisbay invited the pair to camp in their garden overnight and made them pancakes with jam for their travels.

At John O’Groats, a coach load of visitors gave generously, while in Wick a resident invited them into their house for a cup of tea.

At Occumster a farmer offered them accommodation for the night as well as serving them rump steak, cake and cider.

Tolga said he could not believe how much support they have received on the start of their journey.

"We have been blown away by people’s generosity," he said. "Not only in donating, but also in helping us on our way."

The duo has so far raised over £1790 and donations can be made by visiting www.justgiving.com/walktheuk
