Aberdeen university student from Caithness kicked side of police car after Inverness stag do





A 21-year-old Caithness man who is studying at university in Aberdeen drank too much at a stag do in Inverness and ended up in hospital following a fall.

But Inverness Sheriff Court was told that Andrew Sutherland, of Chapel Street, Aberdeen but hails from Lybster injured his head and sought treatment at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

However, Sheriff Robert Frazer was told he got fed up waiting to be seen and wandered back towards the city centre towards the A9, "disorientated from the head injury", his lawyer John MacColl said.

Police were alerted to Sutherland when he was seen on the roundabout at the A9 interchange and when they arrived to check on him, fiscal depute Sophie Marshall told the court he became hostile.

"The officers were going to take him home but he began shouting abusive remarks and instead they took him to a taxi rank where his behaviour continued,” she said.

“He refused to leave the police car but eventually he left it and kicked the side of the car.

"He was flailing his arms around and was taken to the ground by officers and arrested. But the verbal abuse continued."

Sheriff Frazer fined Sutherland, who admitted threatening or abusive behaviour, £320, and told him: "The police were only trying to assist you."
