A teenage driver attracted the attention of police who stopped him in George Street, Wick, where a breath test proved positive.

A subsequent test revealed a level of 42mcg, almost double the legal limit of 22mcg, Wick Sheriff Court was told on Tuesday.

The offender, Leon Skivington (19), pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and was banned for a year. The construction and engineering student, of Lonach, Mid Clyth, was also fined £360.

Solicitor Natalie Paterson told the court that Skivington had passed his driving test less than two months earlier. She said that he decided to drive after having drinks with friends late on September 18, last year.

Disqualification, she added, would mean Skivington would now have to rely on bus transport to get him to college.
