STROMA and many of the stories associated with it will be the focus of a public event in Wick this weekend.

The Wick Society’s oral history section, Wick Voices, is teaming up with Lyth Arts Centre on a presentation exploring the history of the island which has been uninhabited since the early 1960s.

Stroma Stories: Wick Voices – taking place in Wick Heritage Museum on Saturday, from 1pm to 3pm – will feature extracts from oral history interviews about Stroma, along with some pictures of the island.

The presentation ties in with this year’s Lyth summer exhibition which explores Stroma's history and culture.

It is a free event with no need to book.

Charlotte Mountford, a co-director at Lyth Arts Centre, said: “As part of the Lyth summer exhibition, we have had three special Wick Voices recordings all about Stroma installed in the arts centre for people to listen to.

"These have been a real highlight of the exhibition and very popular with visitors, so we're really excited to be hosting this special event with Wick Voices at the Wick Heritage Museum.

“The museum and Wick Voices are amazing resources for the county and we're proud to be partnering with them on our summer exhibition.”

Doreen Leith, who leads the Wick Voices project, explained: "In addition to a presentation of Wick Voices stories linked to Stroma, there will be an opportunity to share knowledge and personal memories of the island."

The Wick Voices oral history collection now features more than 200 recordings which can be accessed at the Wick Society's website.
