Storytelling event ‘Stones and Stories’ at Halkirk on Saturday

On Saturday (October 12) there will be a storytelling event in Halkirk for all ages.

The Scottish International Storytelling Festival runs ‘Go Local’ events, where it supports events around Scotland while its festival runs in Edinburgh.

This year the theme is, ‘How stories link us to the Past, Present and Future’.

Jane Mather will talk about the ‘fossils of the future’ in a session for small kids from 12-2pm. Children should bring along their favourite stones and get ready to decorate some Caithness flags.

Alex Patience talks about how we love and use stones now, from industry to walking pebble beaches. This will be from 3-5pm

Greg MacAllein takes us on a journey through stone histories of Caithness with a focus on Thurso geologist Robert Dick from 6-8pm.

Cally Maxwell, the organiser, says: “Book your place at sidhchailleannart.com/october-storytelling-event/ and make yourself at home at the Ross Institute on comfy furniture amid ceramics, photos and chunks of stone from around Caithness.”

At 8pm, an informal jam session invites players of all abilities to take part in some music making. This will be a warm and welcoming event where people are encouraged to relax, chat and start to welcome in winter.

Cally Maxwell from Sidh Chailleann Art says she is excited to be working with the Northstone StoneFest to put on the Caithness Art and Stone Festival in August 2025. Stone structures for public use will be built at two locations in Halkirk and more material will be produced to illustrate the rich relationship Caithness rocks, stones and minerals have with the the wider world.
