The plight of the seal was spotted by local woman Heather Buchanan on Sunday who immediately contacted the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Ms Buchanan said: “He was laying on rocks up by the grass far away from the water’s edge and close to the cattle gate entering Ackergill.

“The sea had just died down for him to be able to go back in but he was very, very weak and dehydrated after having nothing to eat for three days.”

She added that two seals seemed to be searching for the pup just before the SSPCA turned up.”

She told the paper that the waves pounded the harbour for five days and felt that the pup must have had no choice but to seek shelter on higher ground.

On Monday the pup was taken to a vet for observation before being driven south to a seal sanctuary in Alloa for rehabilitation.
