Stone calling for 'digital democracy' during coronavirus crisis

North MP Jamie Stone has joined a group of more than 100 parliamentarians from nine parties in calling for a "digital democracy" during the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Stone was among those signing a letter from Geraint Davies MP to the Leader of the House of Commons, suggesting ways that parliament can be adapted using technology such as video and teleconferencing.

Mr Stone said later: “MPs should be following the Government’s advice for remote working too, yet it’s crucial that our democracy is transparent and responsive during this pandemic. I need to speak up for the north at a time when their voices need to be heard most.

“If we are asking businesses to adapt quickly and effectively in these changing circumstances, parliament must do the same. These concrete proposals will ensure our democracy continues to function properly after Easter."
