Employees at Mackays Hotel in Wick were treated to a staff appreciation day to thank them for their hard work during 2022 – and to celebrate the hotel's double success in the recent Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards.

Hotel owners Ellie and Murray Lamont were named jointly as Highlands and Islands tourism ambassadors at the awards in Inverness at the start of November. The long-established Wick business also won the award for best hotel experience (over 20 rooms).

The staff appreciation event took place in the run-up to Christmas when the hotel closed its doors for the day. Simon Collier from Mr C’s in Thurso came through to mix up some cocktails before the team headed off to a local Indian restaurant.

Ellie and Murray are the third generation of the Lamont family to have run the hotel over a period of more than 67 years.

Ellie said: "It is important to show our staff we appreciate them. We are very fortunate to have the team we have."

Jenny Williamson, Fiona Ablett and Catherine Begg were presented with their five-year service awards.

Also in the period leading up to the festive season, Murray attended the Christmas show and sale at Quoybrae mart to purchase championship-winning livestock for the annual Taste of Caithness champions dinner being hosted by Mackays Hotel in 2023. This is always a sell-out event.
