THE SSPCA rescue centre at Balmore in Caithness is now full to capacity, it has emerged.

The charity has appealed for local animal lovers who are thinking about getting a new pet to spare a thought for those which are unwanted, abandoned and neglected in its care.

Centre manager Jimmy Gunn said: "Our centre is absolutely full at the moment and we are desperate to find all of the animals loving, new homes. We want to remind people that buying a new pet from a breeder or pet shop is not the only option.

"Many of our animals have had a tough start in life and deserve to be given a second chance. The Scottish SPCA never puts a healthy animal to sleep so all the animals in our centre will stay with us until we find them a new home."

The centre, near Thurso, is open daily between 10am and 4pm.

One of the animals in need of a new home is Badger – a grey and white hound cross.

Despite his age, Badger still has lots of energy and loves going for walks and playing. He is best suited to an adult-only home where he will be the only pet.
