A CALL to try and rescue an iguana stuck up a Thurso tree has left many people with red faces.

The Scottish SPCA was alerted yesterday (June 26) after a woman spotted what looked like a lizard in a tree beside the footbridge close to Miller Academy.

On closer inspection, the animal turned out to be nothing other than a cuddly toy which had been nailed to a branch.

Senior SSPCA inspector Audrey Gunn said: “The lady was shocked when I told her it wasn’t a real iguana as she thought she’d seen it blink.

“I think someone must have nailed the toy to the tree as a joke and I can see why it fooled her.

“My colleague Mandy McIntyre, who works at our animal rescue and rehoming centre in Balmore, is a reptile enthusiast and she’s decided to offer the wee chap a loving home.”

Ms Gunn said it was a nice surprise for once to find there was not an animal in danger and it had given the women a bit of a giggle.

Anyone who finds an animal in danger or distress should call the SSPCA’s animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
