Spring one of driest ever in Wick – despite recent rainfall
The spring of 2025 was one of the driest on record for Wick, with less than 90mm of rain measured over the three-month spell.
Keen local weather watcher Keith Banks said it proved to be the town’s fifth driest in a series going back to 1871.
The rainfall total for spring 2025 in Wick was 89.8mm (3.54 inches).
Mr Banks explained that protracted Omega high blocking events that occurred during April and again during May were responsible for the dearth of rainfall logged in the town, together with other parts of the far north.
However, a change to unsettled westerly weather from May 24 witnessed much-welcomed spells of rain and showers.
Nevertheless, the amount of rain recorded up to May 31, the last day of the meteorological spring, was still substantially lower than Wick’s long-term average total for spring, currently 154.1mm (6.07 inches).
