Wick town centre will benefit from a "planned repair and maintenance programme" in late spring/early summer, it was revealed at a community council meeting this week.
Wick and East Caithness councillor Raymond Bremner said it was hoped that the impending council elections will not stagger progress on the plan and that these "ancillary works" will improve the look of the town centre.
After Monday's meeting of the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council (RBWCC), Cllr Bremner told the paper: "Now that the outcome of the Sustrans project has been realised, I have had meetings with RBWCC and council officers who are now going to coordinate the programme of ancillary works that has been talked about over past months.
"This project will see a planned repair and maintenance programme to improve the aesthetic appeal of the town centre including cleaning and painting of lampposts, barriers, bollards, slabs, flower boxes and many other tasks including jet washing."
Funding has been secured through the Highland Council’s place-based investment fund and a series of planning meetings will be held to co-ordinate and scope out the delivery of the project. The council’s officers, who have been working on the Sustrans project, are going to oversee the programme of ancillary works. Members of the RBWCC will also be part of the project team.
Cllr Bremner said: “Following the great news about Wick securing the bid for funding of stages 3 and 4 of the Sustrans Street Design project, the team that has been involved in delivering that can now also look at moving forward quickly with the ancillary works programme to enhance the look of the town.
"Wick Development Trust, with the help of volunteer contractors, have delivered a fantastic project of gutter cleaning of the buildings in the town centre which will make a big difference. This project will involve volunteer contractors, volunteers, council services and support, and will see the cleaning, maintenance and painting of some of the towns amenity infrastructure including barriers, bollards, slabs, street lights and lampposts.
"There will be an initial scoping meeting to arrange an itinerary of planned works. I’m hoping that we can be in a position to implement this as soon as we can to make the town look better for locals and visitors this summer.”
