Around 60 residents from the Spittal and Mybster area got together to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee with a variety of events.

Event coordinator Jill Tilt said: "We had a really good afternoon and the weather was fantastic too. It carried on into the evening with a dance and a barbecue in the village hall which was transformed into a sea of red, white and blue.

"A lot of work went into it and I think everybody thoroughly enjoyed it. I had a super group of ladies helping who were absolutely first class."

Jill explained that the planning for the event started back in January. "I was driving through the village and I thought we are needing something to get the village going again," she said.

The former local councillor said that over the last two years people in the village, including new residents, had not been able to meet up, so she decided that it would be a good idea to combine the jubilee year with the reopening of the village hall after a thorough spring clean by 23 volunteers.

The celebrations got off to a start with a vintage afternoon tea last Saturday in the garden at the Auld Post Office B&B in Spittal, with sweet and savoury home bakes made by volunteers in the village. Children enjoyed a treasure hunt while adults took part in a royal quiz.

During the proceedings the coordinator delivered a beautiful speech and everyone was upstanding to sing God Save the Queen. She thanked everyone on the day for coming together to celebrate such a momentous occasion in the beautiful garden, and invited those present to toast the Queen with a glass of Prosecco.

A special cake was cut with a military sword by local residents Mary and Dodo Farquhar, who later this year will celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary.

The village was decorated with royal scarecrows, as well as new planters. The celebrations and planters were kindly funded by Halkirk District Community Council and Achlachan Wind Farm Community Fund.

Residents in Spittal, Mybster and Toftingall, had the opportunity to invite their friends and family to join in the celebrations

Plans are now being made to make further use of the village hall for the benefit of everyone in the community.
