The next Live Jive in Thurso is set to mark a special occasion. Organiser Ian Sinclair, a stalwart of the Caithness music scene, will be 80 this year as will a number of his friends so he thought it would be a good idea to celebrate at the gig in the Park Hotel on Sunday, June 25.

"It is none of our birthdays on the day but several of my contemporaries reach the age of 80 this year, so we are having a joint celebration. Fortunately, many of them are still healthy and active. My friend David Farquhar from Texas is here at the time and I hope a few more can turn up, too," said Ian.

He explained he and his classmates went to Thurso High School in 1955 at a time which coincided with the advent of rock 'n' roll.

"We grew up with it and are still rocking at 80," he said. "We are either very lucky or very healthy. Of that original class of '55 only about six have gone.

"I think music is a very healthy thing. The likes of Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and BB King all lived until their 80s and 90s so I just intend to keep going," added Ian, who has no thoughts of retiring from the music scene after a lifetime of involvement.

He said David Farquhar intends to be at the gig and is hopeful several other former classmates, including some from the south, will be there, too. "They will be very welcome to come along and I would be delighted to see any one of them," added Ian, who plays in the Barracuda Boogie Band.

They will be performing along with guests the Riddle brothers – Jamie, Danny and Ryan and Stu Robertson. Sally Edwards and Donald McNeil will also be on the bill.

The afternoon's entertainment will be raising funds for the Dunnet Forestry Trust.

Live Jive started in 2010 and over the years has raised several thousands of pounds for local charities.
