THE fifth series of Music in Thurso concerts will begin with a concert by the award-winning Solem Quartet.

Comprising Amy Tress and William Newell (violins), Joseph Griffin (guest viola) and Stephanie Tress (cello), the quartet was formed in 2011 at the University of Manchester and enjoys a busy concert schedule performing at venues across the UK and internationally.

The musicians' repertoire is extensive, spanning the period from early Haydn to a broad spectrum of living composers including Larry Goves, Anna Meredith and Emily Howard.

Since September 2016 the Solem Quartet has been quartet in residence at the University of Liverpool and was also recently appointed ensemble in residence at Aberystwyth MusicFest.

The remainder of the Music in Thurso series will feature a variety of artistes, including a return visit by Scozzesi, a group of male singers, Corinna Hewat, one of Scotland's leading clarsach players, a flute and guitar duo and another string quartet.

The Solem Quartet concert will be held on Wednesday, September 25, in Thurso West Church at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10.
