IF this weekend's heavy showers failed to wash your car clean then a team of volunteers outside a Wick supermarket were there to help – and all for a good cause.

The soap suds were flying as a mix of adults and children gathered in the car park of Wick's Coop store to raise money towards redeveloping the play park in Reiss village.

Lynsay Rosie from the Reiss and Killimster park committee said: "The existing equipment we have just now is not fit for purpose and what's there is going to be removed by the council soon. We want to build an all-inclusive play park that will suit kids with special needs too."

Lynsay said that the committee were trying to raise £100,000 to create the new facility which would include drainage of the old quarry it will be situated in.

At Sunday's car wash event, the team worked tirelessly over several hours and eventually raised £240 towards their goal.

Lynsay said: "I'm delighted with the total and incredibly thankful for the support shown."

Another member, Allan Crowe, said there had also been a car boot sale towards the cost of the play park and admitted it could take a bit of time to raise the final goal.

"The council don't have the money to keep the existing park up to date and that's why we're here – to raise the cash ourselves with the help of the public."

The committee have a sponsored cycle ride by Sean Stewart and James More planned for September in which the two selfless stalwarts aim to cycle to every play park in Caithness in one day – almost 130 miles in total.
