MET Office forecasters have extended their warnings for snow and ice in the Highlands after issuing a new yellow alert this morning.

Following recent heavy snows, the existing amber and then yellow warnings had been expected to end at 9am on Wednesday.

But the Met Office issued a fresh warning shortly before 8am - with the yellow warning now remaining in place until midday on Thursday, and extra snowfalls of up to 10cm possible on higher routes.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Snow and hail showers are likely to become more widespread from the northwest through Wednesday morning, lasting overnight and into Thursday. For areas away from immediate coasts 1-3 cm of additional snow is likely, with 5-10 cm possible for higher ground above about 100 m.

"Ice will be an additional hazard, especially where any partial thaw has occurred. By Thursday morning, showers will likely be of rain or hail for coasts, as well as the Northern Isles."

The warning area covers the Highlands, Northern Isles, Hebrides and much of Argyll..

It comes on another day of school closures following Tuesday's amber warning and heavy snowfalls, although many secondary schools were expected to be back in action on Wednesday.
