Lyth Arts Centre (LAC) is collaborating with Dundee based Shaper/Caper to bring an imaginative retelling of the classic festive tale the Snow Queen to Caithness schoolchildren this winter.

The Snow Qween is a unique 30-minute interactive festive film for primary schoolchildren created by dance company and charity Shaper/Caper. Family audiences in Caithness might remember Shaper/Caper as the company behind popular shows that have visited Lyth including The Adventures of Isabel and Paper Moon which was LAC’s Christmas show in 2019.

The film innovatively fuses animation with elements of live performance by Shaper/Caper’s Alex McCrossan. LAC, with funding from Creative Scotland, is able to take the festive film out on tour to every primary school in the county. This includes the chance to watch the show on the arts centre’s pop-up cinema screen as well as a specially commissioned activity sheet. The activity sheet has specially commissioned and features Snow Qween inspired crafts, colouring and making ideas created by five local artists.

LAC co-director Charlotte Mountford said: "With so much uncertainty again this winter, we were delighted to be able to work with Shaper/Caper again to ensure children in Caithness had the opportunity to experience some magical festive theatre this Christmas in whatever level of restrictions might be thrown at us.

"The winter programme at LAC is an important part of our community life so we’re glad we could make this happen with support from Creative Scotland and the buy-in of our local schools."

Shaper/Caper artistic director Thomas Small said: "We are so happy to work with LAC again this winter following our performances of Paper Moon at the venue in 2019.

"We loved meeting the Caithness audiences back then so we are delighted to present The Snow Qween this Christmas. We love the brilliant work that the team at LAC are doing so we're pure dead chuffed, as The Snow Qween might say, to be part of their programme this year."

The event has been made possible with funding from Creative Scotland’s Open Fund: Sustaining Creative Development and runs through this week and next week into the final days of term.
