With wintry conditions prevailing throughout Caithness today (December 23), Far North MP Jamie Stone commented on the closure of the snow gates at the Ord.

The Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross MP responded to the announcement that the snow gates on the A9 between Berriedale and Helmsdale are now closed and how the county is effectively an "island".

"Caithness is now an island locked in by snow with no feasible alternative routes to the nearest maternity service," he said.

"God help any pregnant woman or new mother at this time – they must be sick with worry knowing that should they need help, they will not be able to access it.

"How many instances like this have to occur for the Scottish Government to realise that the far north is in desperate need of having its maternity services restored at Caithness General Hospital?"
