Smashed glass warning as Caithness bottle banks overflow
Bottle banks in areas of Caithness are filled to the gunwales with bottles and jars that are creating a broken glass hazard around them.
Drivers dropping off their bottles and pet owners are especially warned to be cautious when approaching the bottle banks due to shards of glass surrounding the area.
Highland Council apologises that some glass bottle banks across the region are full and for the ongoing disruption to glass collections this August.
The council’s glass collection contractor is experiencing issues with glass bank emptying due to vehicle breakdowns.
The council and the contractor are working hard to empty the banks.
A Highland Council spokesperson says: "In the meantime, if a local glass bank is full, please avoid leaving glass by the banks – please take it away with you until the banks have capacity."

The issue was previously highlighted in an article published on July 31 in which the council said there had not been an uplift since July 20 but that there would be an uplift on August 1.
Glass is normally collected weekly. It is bulked up in Inverness before going for sorting and crushing at the Sibelco recycling plant at Newhouse, near Motherwell.
