CAITHNESS Shinty Club has strong links to the new county flag of Caithness with two of its players closely associated with how it was created.

Club captain Alan MacDonald was the man who originally suggested the idea of creating a county flag which inspired the North of Scotland Newspapers Fly the Flag for Caithness campaign in 2014.

His team mate Luke Merchant is the husband of Andrea Merchant from Wick who created the Nordic cross design which was voted the winner in a public vote.

The team carried the flag with them at the Dropkick 6's tournament held in Edinburgh on Saturday.

The county flag was officially unveiled at Caithness House in Wick last month with a limited number still available to purchase at the council offices at Market Square in Wick and at Rotterdam Street in Thurso.
