Sheriff awaits report after threatening call

A sheriff heard this week about a telephone threat made by David More. He told James Ross that he wanted to “hold you down and kick your teeth in” or “words to that effect”.

Mr Ross was visiting in the John O’Groats area on June 27 when he received the call around mid-afternoon, Wick Sheriff Court heard on Tuesday.

David Barclay explained that Mr Ross’s mobile phone was on speaker mode and the menacing comment was overheard by a witness standing nearby.

The fiscal told Sheriff Andrew Berry that the two men’s respective families had a history of dispute or disagreement but added: “I can’t say for definite whether that is the reason for the offence, but it is the only link or connection I am aware of.”

Solicitor Josey Donachie said: “My client was struggling with his mental health at the time and still is,” and added that he was currently subject to a supervision order for an unrelated offence.

She suggested that deferring sentence for a background report might be the way forward.

Sheriff Berry agreed and will consider the report on September 7 before sentencing More (32), who admitted making the unacceptable call and a record.

A plea of not guilty to a further charge alleging that More, of Stainland Drive, Thurso, punctured the tyres of a car outside a house in Battery Road, Wick, between June 23 and 24, was accepted by Mr Barclay.
