TWO Highland MSPs have been given roles in the new Scottish Conservative Party shadow cabinet.

Highlands and Islands list MSP Mary Scanlon becomes the party’s spokesman on energy, enterprise and tourism while fellow list MSP Jamie McGrigor takes on the environment and climate change brief.

They are part of new Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson’s 13-strong front-bench team.

“I believe it’s a strong team which plays to the talents of the members, and will prove well able to hold the Government to account,” said Ms Davidson.

Also given roles are the three candidates the new leader beat in the election. Jackson Carlaw becomes the party’s deputy leader while Murdo Fraser, who was the runner-up in the contest, is the convener for the economy, energy and tourism committee.

Margaret Mitchell becomes the party’s local government and planning spokesperson.
