THE final date for the demolition of Dounreay has been revealed as the operators aim to have completed the clean-up within 11 years.

The Babcock Dounreay Partnership has announced that September 14, 2023, is the latest end date.

The target was set by DSRL managing director Roger Hardy who said that was when all redundant facilities need to be flattened and the waste sorted, segregated and made safe for the long term.

Despite admitting that completing the job within the set timescale will be a big ask, Mr Hardy said that his team has been delighted by how staff have responded to the challenge.

"No-one seems hugely surprised by what we think is achievable," he said.

"We’re in a period now called consolidation. This is when we integrate our plans and our people in the work of the site licence company, adjust the lifetime plan and secure the agreement of our regulators to implement it."

Babcock was formally awarded the contract to manage the decommissioning, demolition and clean-up of the Dounreay site having officially taken ownership of Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd in April.
