Seaview fundraiser boosts local groups
AN event staged at Seaview House in Wick to benefit the town’s Playbox nursery and Caithness Deaf Care has raised over £1000.
The cash came from holding a raffle and stalls at the care home.
The main raffle prize was a £500 cheque to the local charity of the winner’s choice and winner Wilma Henderson chose the SSPCA centre at Balmore to receive the prize.
Charley Bramble, treasurer of Playbox nursery committee, said: "We get a certain amount given to us by the council for wages etc but the bulk of the bills and extras need to be paid for by fundraising. This cheque will help to buy Christmas presents for the children and keep us going into the new year."
Jimmy Gunn, who has been the manager at the Balmore animal centre for 19 years, received his cheque from Ms Henderson, a staff nurse at Seaview.

He said: "All of our running costs rely on donations — we get no grants or government funding and this money will go towards keeping us operational into the future."
Deirdre Aitken, co-ordinator of Caithness Deaf Care, added: "We rely on funding to help keep the Wick and Thurso centres open and for us to be able to visit people in their own homes who perhaps can’t get out due to poor transport and assistance.
"We currently have over 1000 people registered with our service as the need has steadily increased since we opened in 1994, however, our funding has not increased in all of that time.
"Our service is essential in helping to identify people who are vulnerable and flag them up with other services like social services and this money will help to keep supporting the community."
