The Fishermen's Mission area officer for Caithness and Orkney said she was honoured to be asked to officiate at the dedication of the Seafarers Memorial in Wick.

Scrabster-based Jackie Dodds said: "The monument is absolutely magnificent and so fitting for the setting and for the group that it represents, the seafarers.

"I'm so honoured to be part of this dedication. It's so emotive.

"So many people in Caithness have got connections with the sea and have lost loved ones in the past, and not just in the past but there are people that are still feeling the pain of more recent tragedies.

"I was very proud and honoured to be part of it and to represent the Fishermen's Mission."

The unveiling was carried out by Isobel Leask, who had made a generous donation to the Seafarers Memorial Group in the early days of the fundraising campaign.

Mrs Leask said afterwards that it had been an emotional occasion to be part of, and described the monument as "perfect".

She added: "When you look at the face of the monument you can feel it's looking at everything, everybody."
