Scrabster ranked in top three most valuable fishing ports





SCRABSTER is the third most valuable fishing district in Scotland after latest figures revealed the value of landings at all fishing districts in Scotland.

Figures which have been released by the Scottish Government revealed 17.6 tonnes of seafish and shellfish valued at £31.8 million were landed at Caithness’ biggest port during 2015.

Only landings made in Peterhead at £138 million and Shetland at £72 million proved more valuable last year.

During 2015. 314,000 tonnes of sea fish and shellfish was landed in Scotland with a total value of £391 million.

Scrabster district accounted for six per cent of all fish which was landed at Scottish ports during last year with 93 vessels landing a total of 17,587 tonnes. Monkfish was the most valuable fish landed at Scrabster by fishermen during 2015 valued at £6.1 million with hake the second most valuable fish landed valued at £5.8 million. The largest amount of fish landed at Scrabster was haddock at 3910 tonnes but was only the third most valuable at £5.3 million.

Cod also continues to be popular with fishermen who land at Scrabster with over 1.6 tonnes caught and transported from the port at a value of £3.1 million.

A total of 3.9 tonnes of shellfish, which includes, crabs, lobsters, nephrops, scallops, squid, velvet crabs, whelks and other shellfish was landed at Scrabster valued at £6.4 million. Crabs was the most valuable shellfish at £4.1 million with £1.1 million worth of scallops also landed at the port.
