SCOTRAIL is to invest £2 million to help services run more efficiently in severe winter conditions.

It comes in response to customer feedback and lessons learned after last winter which was described as the worst for a century.

The investment will be spent on new equipment and initiatives to keep more trains running, improve the flow of live information and enhance station access.

It will also be spent on power-shower systems at all maintenance depots to remove snow and ice from undersides of trains and 75-metre polytunnels to de-ice trains faster in a controlled, warm environment.

Money will also be spent on improving live travel information at stations, platforms and on trains.

ScotRail stressed prolonged subzero temperatures and snow will affect train services but the actions taken will reduce the impact on customers and help get back to normal as quickly as possible.

ScotRail’s managing director, Steve Montgomery, said: "Our investment and actions demonstrate a real commitment to our customers and the lessons of last winter. It’s all about keeping customers informed and minimising disruption."
