AN award-winning children’s theatre show is being staged at Lyth Arts Centre as part of the Caithness International Science Festival.

Space Ape is a new science fiction storytelling performance for children aged six years and over that will take young audiences on a journey through art, science and philosophy to tell the story of Yorick, the first monkey to live through a space flight.

The show is performed by its creator Andy Cannon, a leading storyteller for young audiences.

He said: "Being a child of the ’60s I, like many people my age, grew up with a fascination for space travel and remember vividly sitting in with my family watching the historic moment in 1969 as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took their historic steps on another world.

"Interest in space travel is on the increase again, helped by the voyage by UK astronaut Tim Peake. Media coverage of his trip to the International Space Station was vast and education connections with it were abundant.

"Reports shared that Tim Peake hoped his space mission would inspire the next generation of space explorers.

"Space Ape is science fiction. Yorick’s story will be interwoven with true stories of animal space travel and a wealth of scientific questions and facts.

"I see it as a celebration of art and science, of curiosity and imagination that aims to inspire young audiences."

The performance will play to schools and family audiences next week. Tickets for the public show on Tuesday, March 17, at 6pm, are available from www.lytharts.org.uk or by calling the box office on 01955 641 434. They are priced at £6.
