Thousands of Highland pupils have been told to stay at home today as treacherous wintry conditions continue.

The official Highland Council list can be found here, although some known closed schools were not immediately listed.

Just after 8 am, almost 20,000 youngsters were set to miss classes.

Inverness has seen all of its secondary schools closed for the day, giving staff and pupils a long weekend, with Inverness Royal Academy, Millburn Academy, Culloden Academy, Inverness High School and Charleston Academy all announcing closure in messages to parents.

The closures stretch all the way north to Wick and Thurso, with many primary schools also shut.

Other secondaries in the region among the early closures announced included Glen Urquhart High, Invergordon Academy, Ullapool High School and Wick High School.
