Work to install a new footpath at Swiney Hill, Lybster has been completed on schedule thanks to a local community group.

The footpath extends the core path further along the coast above Lybster harbour and opens up new vantage points for walkers and visitors to the area.

The project was managed by Latheron, Lybster and Clyth Community Development Company (LLCCDC) on behalf of the local community. Funding was provided by SSE Beatrice Caithness Community Fund, RWE Camster Wind Farm Community Fund along with a private donation – with work being carried out by local firm John Gunn and Sons Ltd.

Andrew Gunn of LLCCDC explained: “If the last 18 months have taught us anything, access to open space for health benefits is important.

"The work we carried out has opened a new path and removed steep stiles to give easier access for all. The historic fishermen's path used for over 200 years has also been resurfaced to improve the walk up and down the hill. The last time work was carried out on the path was back in 2005 so it needed some attention.”

LLCCDC is grateful to the funders and local landowners who made this project happen. Discussions are underway with the John O’Groats Trail, Highland Council Ranger Service and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust to look at other environmental projects in the area.

A new Caithness stone bench was also erected in memory of local businessman David Gunn who served as an office bearer with Lybster Harbour Society.
