SASSY Lady continued her recent run of success when she took the supreme overall champion title at the Caithness County Show at the weekend.

The Limousin cross-bred March-born calf owned by Kris Sutherland, of Dunbeath Farms, was the reserve overall champion on the field at the Latheron Show the previous week.

Sired by Lodge Hamlet, it was a clean sweep for the female calf which took the commercial championship and then went on to take the overall cattle award and finally the champion of champions trophy.

Taking the reserve overall champion award on the field was the North County Cheviot gimmer belonging to James Mackay, Biggins, Killimster, which was making its showing debut. After Biggins Top Notch, the gimmer was the Cheviot champion and then went on to take the overall sheep title.

It was a good show for Joanne Smith and Jonathan Gunn of Mavsey, Lybster, who took the reserve overall cattle award with the champion Simmental Caithness Jenson, a 13-year-old bull calf owned by their three-year-old son Jenson Gunn.

The winning calf was sired by Mavsey Hans Jenson, which was sold at the bull sales last February, and its mother was Slievenagh Gorgeous, a heifer they bought from Northern Ireland two years ago and is a daughter of the British Simmental Cattle Society's only golden cow award winner.

Mavsey also won the Aberdeen Angus championship with Tonley Ester, a heifer which was the reserve female champion in the cattle section.

The reserve overall sheep award went to the group of three commercial sheep champions – a Texel cross ewe and her pair of Suffolk lambs – shown by William Barnetson & Sons, Lynegar, Watten. This was the ewe's fourth championship. She has been a champion every year since being a gimmer.

In the horse section the overall horse award went to Geraldine and Elle Harrold's home-bred coloured yearling Independent Boy (Bailey), shown by Russell Skelton of Team Skelton.

The gelding, sired by Co-Pilot, and out of Anagmore Bella, was the in-hand champion and then went on to pick up the overall light horse ticket before taking the supreme title. Independent Boy was the reserve champion in the coloured horse and pony in-hand section at the Royal Highland Show last month.

Taking the reserve supreme horse award was the young Highland champion, Macdhui of Achnacarry, a yearling owned by Natalie MacDonald, of Bridge Street, Halkirk. This was the yearling's first show.

The overall ridden horse champion went to Isla Miller's Kilmastulla Lucy Q, ridden by Lucy Stewart, while reserve went to Ruth Sutherland with Mastermind IV.

The pony ridden champion was Shanrye Finley, ridden by Lisa Kennedy, of Blarmhor House, Halkirk, with reserve going to the lead rein winner Newoak Anniversary, shown by Emma Florence, North Bylbster.

SWI

SWI show committee secretary Alison Hill said: “We’re delighted with the number entries that we’ve got this year and the effort everyone has put in to give a lovely display for people to see when they come to the show.

“The girls on the committee make a lovely job of setting out all the entries. We’re really pleased with the standard of entries from everyone. We are slightly down on last year, but then last year we had a large increase in entries so it’s hard to sustain that. But we’ve still got more entries than a couple of years ago.
