WORK has been carried out by Highland Council to clear sand from the Esplanade area of Thurso.

The authority says it will continue to monitor the roads and drains near the beach and is in talks with environment partners in Scottish Government, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

A council spokeswoman said it is understood the sand was blown from private land during sandstorms in January 2019 and last year during September and from late November to early December.

"As the local roads authority and coast protection authority, Highland Council has fulfilled its duty to maintain the roads and associated drainage systems by removing sand in the affected areas," she said.

"While the council has powers to construct and maintain coastal erosion/control measures it is under no duty to carry out such measures. The council’s capital programme does not include coastal defence measures in this area."
