A VIABLE tourism industry for the Far North depends on securing the future of remote fuel stations.

That is the view of North Highland Initiative chairman David Whiteford who said the availability of fuel is a genuine concern for successful tourism.

He said if there is a lack of places to obtain fuel, it will prevent people travelling around once they are in the region.

"It will have a huge negative impact on how visitors view coming to the North Highlands," he said.

"Rather than visiting an outstandingly beautiful landscape they will perceive it as an empty wilderness.

"We would stress that sustaining fuel stations is essential to tourism and other industries in the area."
