A LARGE assembly of Rotarians and guests thoroughly enjoyed Thurso Rotary Club's annual Burns supper in the Pentland Hotel.

With fine music, thoughtful words and good food the company was well entertained throughout the evening in celebration of Scotland's national bard.

The Immortal Memory was given by Christopher Pearson, who focused on the paradox of Burns, the man, and the paradoxical nature of Scottish people. He gave two poems, and in particular one reflecting on the "gastric effects" of overindulgence in the riches of the Burns supper.

The Toast to the Lassies was given by Kevin Sutherland who added much merriment and laughter to the proceedings with his stories and anecdotes. Yardi Cumming replied on behalf of the lassies with much wit and humour.

The evening had a poignant note, however, when a new memorial quaich was inaugurated for the toasting of the haggis. This was in memory of the late Rotarian Peter Murchison, who passed away in 2018 and who, through his love of Burns, had initiated Thurso Rotary Club’s annual Burns supper 35 years ago – a tradition that has continued ever since.
