Thurso Community Council chairman Ron Gunn is to seek election to Highland Council as a Liberal Democrat candidate.

He will contest the Thurso and Northwest Caithness ward at the election in May.

Mr Gunn also chairs Caithness Health Action Team (CHAT) and the Association of Caithness Community Councils and is a board member of Thurso Community Development Trust, a member of the NHS Highland Caithness Redesign Group and a member of Dounreay Stakeholder Group.

He is part of the new Forss Campaign Group seeking road safety improvements on the A836 and is the press officer for Thurso RNLI.

“I’m pleased to be standing with the support of the Liberal Democrats in May’s council election," Mr Gunn said. "Caithness is facing big challenges and I want to make sure that our voice is heard.

“If elected to Highland Council, my three key priorities will be improving our healthcare services, repairing our roads and infrastructure, and putting Caithness firmly back on the map.”

Jamie Stone, the Lib Dem MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, said: “Ron has helped lead many important campaigns in Caithness over the years, not least his tireless work with CHAT to retain local health services.

"I am delighted that he has decided to join us and I look forward to working with him to secure a good deal for Thurso and Northwest Caithness.”

Councillor Alasdair Christie, leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Highland Council, said: “Ron’s dedication to his community is clear. At a time when many folk are struggling due to the cost-of-living crisis, it’s crucial that communities have a strong local champion.

"Ron will be a fantastic advocate for Caithness on Highland Council and will make an important contribution to the Liberal Democrat group.”
