In its winter road report for today, Highland Council warned of the impact of black ice and frozen slush after a car accident on the B876 at Bower.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5.50am on Monday, 21 February, police were called to a one-car road crash on the B876 near Bower. There were no serious injuries reported and recovery was arranged.”

Posted at 8.23am the council bulletin stated: "Inland roads impacted by black ice and frozen slush. East coast not impacted to the same extent. All roads and footpaths being treated. Car accident at Bower B876 just as gritter was passing the area. No other issues reported."

Road condition reports were issued for other areas including Sutherland. Posted at 8.29am it said: "Mainly wet roads on lower ground with an odd sparkle in places. Icy patches and very icy stretches in shelter and on higher roads. Some roads have a covering of slush/snow with up to an inch of snow on the Struie, treatment ongoing as necessary in accordance with policy."

Posted at 7.44am the Ross and Cromarty report states: "Primary routes have occasional sparkle and icy patches with standing water, higher sections still reporting inch of hard-packed snow. Secondary routes and higher dusting to one-and-a-half inches of snow. All being treated as necessary. No overnight issues reported."

The council's information is a summary of reports from operational staff and is intended to give a general indication of typical conditions in each area at a point in time. It is not intended to imply that any individual route is entirely snow and ice free and drivers must be aware that conditions can change rapidly and make their own assessment of conditions for travelling.
