People are being urged to help out at the most northerly parkrun on the British mainland. Thurso parkrun takes place every Saturday at 9.30am at the boating pond.

Donna Stewart, event director for Thurso parkrun, said: "Volunteering at parkrun is so rewarding. There is a range of roles that can be undertaken from marshalling, barcode scanning, finish tokens and tail walking. They are all easy to undertake but we provide training.

"You don’t need to run or walk to be a volunteer, if you want to get involved in a community event to volunteer, this could be an excellent opportunity. Also there is no commitment to volunteer each week, you can work it round other commitments."

She added that parkrun – a global network of weekly 5km events which can be walked or run – recognises the importance of volunteering and volunteering milestones are recognised at 25, 50, 100, 250 and 500 events.

"I reached the unofficial milestone of volunteering 150 times last weekend, and I feel a great sense of achievement," Donna said. "Volunteering at parkrun is one of the most rewarding things I do every week – it is a welcoming, supportive community of volunteers and I love being involved with it."
