Retired minister sees Superman sunset over the Pentland Firth

A RETIRED Church of Scotland minister saw a strange phenomenon as the sun was setting over the north Caithness coast.

The Rev Lyall Rennie was looking from his window when he witnessed a large letter S formed from sunlight reflecting off clouds in the distance – similar to the badge emblem worn by fictional DC Comics superhero Superman.

"It was Isabel, my wife, who noticed it first and commented that it looked like the S on Superman’s outfit so she took a photo of it," Mr Rennie said.

The popular Canisbay Kirk minister hung up his dog collar along other ecclesiastical garments and called it a day on preaching from the pulpit in September last year.

"We have seen some spectacular sunsets over the past few weeks. Our house is between Canisbay Kirk and Gills harbour so we have a great view over the Pentland Firth," he said.

While admitting he's not much of a Superman fan, the retired minister felt that the spectacular phenomenon could give a real sense of hope in such troubling times.

"Quite a number of folk have said that they have appreciated the lovely sunrises and sunsets during lockdown and has in a small way actually given them hope for the future."

Mr Rennie says that though officially retired he's still kept busy with various church activities and hospital chaplaincy.

He added: "I doubt the Superman sunset is a sign from God, but who knows?"
