PEOPLE living around a Thrumster quarry are being advised to stay indoors and close all doors and windows as emergency services carry out the controlled destruction of phosphorus grenades found in Wick on Monday.

A total of 144 of the grenades were found in the Bank Row garden of retired James Duncan, a keen radio ham, who came across them while digging in preparation for a new radio transmitter.

The Second World War munitions are being destroyed in a controlled "burn-off" by Northern Constabulary and the Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service today (Wednesday).

The advice to remain indoors is being given because of the strong, southerly winds. Police say there are no health risks and this is a precautionary measure only.
