MORE trained medics are needed to help rescue stranded mammals that are found washed ashore.

That’s according to British Divers Marine Life Rescue which has appealed for new members to join its team in the Far North.

Scarfskerry is the home of the BDMLR Highland Seal Hospital where rescued seal pups from throughout Scotland are treated, cared for and rehabilitated and released back into the wild.

Eighty per cent of the team’s call outs are to rescue seal pups found injured or in ill health.

BDMLR sub-co-ordinator for Caithness and Sutherland Audrey Gunn said the organisation needs to train more people as marine mammal medics if the group is to continue its work in the North.

"It is essential to recruit new medics to ensure that the charity can continue to respond, rescue and save our seals, whales, dolphins and other marine mammals," she said.

"We are appealing for enthusiastic and committed people who care about Scotland’s marine life to join our team."

The BDMLR will be holding a course to train volunteers on Saturday, April 14, at the Pentland Firth Yacht Club at Scrabster.
