AN exhibition featuring the work of a renowned Caithness sculptor drew admirers from across the country at its grand opening last Friday.

Caithness Horizons in Thurso is hosting the Ann Henderson exhibition until September 4.

The showcase by the Ormlie-born artist features 27 sculptures made from a variety materials.

Born into a farming family in 1921, Ann attended Miller Academy in Thurso before going on to study sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art where she was the only woman to graduate from her course in 1945.

Her career took her to Paris before she eventually became senior lecturer at the school of sculpture in Edinburgh.

She became known for her experimental techniques and for being among the first in Scotland to use materials such as polyester resins and fibreglass in her work.

A regular exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy in London, Ann divided her time between Edinburgh and her croft at Balinoe, near Culrain.

A large studio was built on the croft for Ann’s retirement, however, her enjoyment of this was brief when she died in 1976.

Caithness Horizons’ visitor service advisor Helen Moore said the display is an opportunity to celebrate one of the county’s most talented artists.

She said: "This exhibition provides a fantastic and rare opportunity to view a collection of work by this inspirational artist in the town where she was born."
