Reconnecting with nature is theme of new book from Caithness publisher
The latest book from Caithness-based Whittles Publishing is about reconnecting with nature – against the backdrop of Scotland’s capital city and the surrounding area.
Wild Places, Wild Encounters: Exploring Edinburgh’s Living Landscapes is written by Glen Cousquer, a naturalist, photographer, outdoor educator, wilderness guide, mountain leader and lecturer.
It includes nature connection walks in and around Edinburgh and the Lothians, while providing ecological and historical details.
In the foreword, author and naturalist Mark Cocker says: “This book is as much a guide on how we should live within nature, and acknowledge our deep obligations, as a guide to a city’s wildlife riches. In this regard it is groundbreaking.”
As a lecturer in conservation medicine and one health at the University of Edinburgh, Dr Cousquer “supports professionals in learning how to collaborate across disciplines to seek optimal health for humans, other animals and the environment”.
Whittles Publishing, based in Dunbeath, says: “This is a book about reconnecting to nature wherever we find ourselves living and the personal benefits that can ensue.

“It explores how we can appreciate the natural world on our doorstep in line with the latest research from a range of disciplines, including ecology, outdoor and environmental education, learning for sustainability and mindfulness studies.
“It does so by means of a blend of encounter-based photography, connection with nature and reading the landscape.”
Wild Places, Wild Encounters: Exploring Edinburgh’s Living Landscapes (£18.99, softback) is illustrated with 14 maps and 250 photographs.
