Reay and District Garden Club's annual show brightens up village

Entries to Reay and District Garden Club’s annual show were higher than expected after the enforced absence of two years.

Organisers said the show, held in Reay Village Hall last Saturday, was well supported with a colourful array of plants, flowers, fruit and vegetables – together with tables of mouth-watering baking and produce.

Judges attended in the morning before members joined them in the afternoon. Mrs Deirdre Swanson judged the Floral Arrangements and the Children’s exhibits. Mrs Marion Sutherland judged the Produce and Baking, Mr James Macdonald was the judge for the Pot Plants, Cut Flowers and Vegetables.

The overall number of entries was higher than expected despite of a reduction in the number of classes in some sections in the schedule.

The vegetable section was popular this year while organisers were encouraged to see some new names on the entry labels in all sections and many new faces coming along during the afternoon to enjoy the occasion.

Reay Primary School pupils had worked hard to produce artwork to enhance the show atmosphere. A stunning display of “Watering Cans” (Primary 1-3), and “Vase of Flowers” (Primary 4-7) together with the contribution from the pre-school children, “Bumble Bees”, added greatly to the atmosphere of the show.

The traditional feature of the “tea and cake” – this year served within an area of the main hall – provided an opportunity for everyone to rest their weary feet and chat about the weather and the wonders of the exhibits.

The trophies were presented by Mrs Cathy Stewart, who was in turn presented with a bouquet of flowers.

Reay and District Garden Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month in Reay Village Hall, with a varied programme of illustrated talks, discussions and social events throughout the year. New members and friends are always welcome.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 7, and the topic will be “After the show and the way forward”.
