Rare raptors spotted in skies above Caithness

CAITHNESSIANS are being encouraged to keep their eyes to the skies following sightings of many a scarce and rare raptor across the county.
A gyrfalcon, a rough-legged buzzard, a white-tailed eagle and even a golden eagle have been spotted in the area in recent months and bird lovers are hoping for more.
Experts are still hoping for a repeat of the sighting of a very unusual hobby – a bird about the size of a kestrel with long pointed wings, reminiscent of a giant swift – and a honey buzzard, both at Dunnet Head last June.
The Caithness Birds website at www.caithnessbirds.co.uk keeps a full record of bird sightings in the county. The group can also be followed on Twitter.
