Rare bird recorded singing at Strathy Point in Sutherland

A very rare visitor to Britain has turned-up thousands of miles off course in Sutherland.

A white-throated sparrow was recorded singing near Strathy Point in Highland, although in an area with no general access, said Rare Bird Alert.

While there have been a few historical records in Scotland, the white-throated sparrow is not a regular visitor. Picture: iStock/BirdImages

The white-throated sparrow normally lives in parts of North America and Canada.

There are only a handful of sightings in the UK most years.

It is an attractive bird with its black eyestripe, and a white throat bordered by a black whisker.

They are mainly found across Canada. In winter they tend to migrate to North America and California.

The white-throated sparrow are usually spotted near the ground searching for food.

The rare bird travelled more than 3000 miles across open water. Where the bird flies to next is anyone's guess.
