Raigmore Hospital ward to reopen after C. diff outbreak

A WARD at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness forced to close following an outbreak of Clostridium difficile is expected to reopen tomorrow (Saturday).

Deep cleaning of ward 5C got under way on Thursday after its closure to new admissions and transfers on Monday.

The ward has had two cases of Clostridium difficile which is higher than expected.

Dr Jonty Mills, consultant microbiologist at Raigmore, explained that with no new cases since Monday deep cleaning was able to begin.

He said: "The actions we took were largely to reduce the risk of the infection spreading within the ward environment and we have managed to contain this outbreak by acting quickly.

"We have been closely monitoring the situation and I am content that it has now come to an end and deep cleaning was able to begin.

"All staff involved, which includes the nursing team, infection control, pharmacy, clinical colleagues and our team of domestics, have worked incredibly hard throughout this week to ensure that this is kept under control."
