The first day's planting of Queen's Platinum Jubilee trees will take place on Monday (May 8) in Wick as part of The Big Help Out day at the end of King Charles III's Coronation weekend.

On Monday, members of the public are invited to take part in The Big Help Out, which will encourage people to try volunteering for themselves and join the work being undertaken to support their local areas.

The tree planting plan was discussed at this week's meeting of the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council (RBWCC) on Tuesday evening in the Assembly Rooms.

Allan Farquhar, RBWCC vice chair, said that the community council had already applied to The Woodland Trust for trees to plant for the Queens Platinum Jubilee. "As applications were oversubscribed at the time we have only recently received 105 tree saplings to plant in our preferred locations of King George V Field [aka Green Road park] and at the newly refurbished Hillhead playpark," said Mr Farquhar.

"We are contacting parents in the locality of the parks through Noss Primary school to offer their children the opportunity to plant and take ownership of their own tree. We intend to have our first planting day on the 8th of May in King George V field to coincide with King Charles III's Coronation – a gesture we are sure he would consider favourably.

"This will be followed by another planting day in Hillhead park in a few weeks time."
