PUPILS and staff at Wick’s South School bounced back from a setback in their drive to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care. The children had planted daffodil bulbs with a view to selling them off to raise funds for the charity but unfortunately very few bulbs took root.

Undaunted, the school’s pupil council changed tack and set about raising money in a range of other ways., including an appeal to stick on coins to the shape of a large daffodil (the logo for Marie Curie) and a baking sale on Friday when pupils were asked to leave their navy blue uniform at home and instead wear something yellow to school.

Over £300 was raised and lots of fun was had into the bargain as children created paper daffodils, drew daffodil pictures and had a yellow-themed face painting session.

The school came together in the afternoon for an assembly which was centred on the vital work done by Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Headteacher Pat Bowers said: "It is amazing how much money can be raised by so many eager children and the daffodil theme was perfect to tie in with St David’s Day."
