FRUIT and veg will add to the mix in the third week of Wick’s trial series of indoor markets.

The market is being held on each Saturday in September in the foyer of Caithness House, the Highland Council building in Market Square.

It is organised by members of the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council, who this Saturday will be looking to build on the encouraging response over the first two weekends.

Feedback from the trial run will help inform a feasibility study on possible community use of the former Original Factory Shop in the town centre.

The community council is tendering for consultants to carry out the study, and the closing date for tenders is September 30.

Community council secretary John Bogle said: "We are delighted with how the first two weeks have gone. There has been a great turnout of the public each day and stall holders have been very pleased with what they have taken in.

"The home baking stalls have sold out both days.

"Several members of the public have said they would like to see fresh fruit and vegetables on sale and we are delighted that this Saturday [September 21] Puffin Croft will be present with a range of fruit and veg, a lot of it sourced locally.

"There will also be some new stalls this week, including ladies' clothing, calligraphy and hats. Already stall holders are asking for the indoor market to be repeated in the run-up to Christmas and I am in discussions with Highland Council about this."

The market will again run from 10am to 3pm.

The initiative is part of the Wick town centre regeneration programme.
